These things not only keep track of your personal information, but also enable hackers and crackers to infiltrate your system. Anonymous proxy servers act as a wall between your data and the Internet, whereby providing security to your system and data. There are however, other reasons to use an anonymous proxy server.

If your work or school has any type of filtering in place to prevent people from visiting certain websites, an anonymous proxy server is a great way to get around such restrictions. Anonymous proxy servers work by acting as a "middle man"; they download the requested pages to their proxy server and in turn you download the page, all images and other such objects from the proxy server to your browser, thus bypassing any filters or annoying firewalls. Not only is this a viable alternative for students to bypass their school's filter to access such popular student sites such as Myspace or Xanga but can be used if your workplace has strict limitations on which websites you can access. Most anonymous proxy bypass servers use one of two program, PHProxy or CGIProxy, both of which are excellent proxy software packages.

After you have discovered the benefits of using anonymous proxy servers, you will probably want to try it out. There are numerous free proxy services out there, one of the most popular is SpySurfing ( http://www.spysurfing.com/ ) and is a really fast proxy server that is popular among both students look to bypass their school filters and adults looking to bypass their work place firewalls.

Steve Avery, http://www.spysurfing.com
Streamyx FAQ
Self%20installation%20guide
Streamyx Speedtest
Agent Registration
Contact Us
Terms And Conditions
Privacy Policy
Disclaimer
Streamyx Kuala Lumpur
Streamyx Petaling Jaya
Streamyx Puchong
Streamyx Selayang
Streamyx Ampang
Streamyx Cheras
Streamyx Gombak

Internet Access in Mainland China for Business and Leisure

Internet access in China

It was difficult getting internet access in China a mere 6 years ago. Corporate leased line were difficult to apply for, hotels had no internet access, dial-ups were extremely unreliable, xDSL or cable were largely unavailable and cybercafes largely denied foreigners access.

Today, China is one of the easiest country in the Asia to make internet accessible to businesses, homes, travellers and students.

If you are a business traveller or tourist, you will be pleasantly surprised that almost all hotels, down to 3 stars hotels, even in more remote cities offer broadband internet access in their hotel rooms. Most rooms will have an ethernet port for you to hook up to the hotel's broadband. Access is mostly automatically DHCP with dynamic IPs but in certain hotels, you may need to call the reception to allow access from your room.

You can also visit a cybercafe or 'wang ba' as they are known in China. Cybercafes are everywhere in China and can be a dingy 5 computer setup to large cybercafes with hundreds and hundreds of computers. Most cybercafes in China are patronized by young people whose sole purpose are computer games or online-chatting. These youngsters can spend days in the cybercafes without going home. If you find them too noisy for your liking, you can even request for a private VIP room to surf in peace and comfort!

As a foreigner, you will need to show your passport before you can be allowed access to a cybercafe. In many provinces, the local law requires your picture to be taken and your particulars submitted to a central database. The cybercafes are pretty strict about this or they are liable to have their operating licences taken away. Cybercafes are lucrative businesses in China and you can be sure that they implement the required laws most strictly!

One of the problem that you may face in a public cybercafe is that all the log-in procedures and computer operating systems will only be in Chinese even in the touristy areas. Hence, you will need the cybercafe operator assistance before you can eventually start answering all your Hotmails and Gmails.

If you like visiting coffee cafes, you will also find that many of the newer cafes offer internet points for you to plug in your laptop. Most of the time, usage is free. At this point of time, wireless internet access does not seem to be entirely popular as compared to wire access in these cafes.

If you are running a business, getting a corporate lease line or xDSL broadband is a breeze with very competitive ISP fighting for your business. Monthly charges are low and access speed is decent. In fact, many newer office buildings offer broadband access as part of the rental deal and you need not apply seperately to the ISP.

Home users are well taken care of as well. Many new apartment also comes with broadband access or you can apply to the ISPs directly. Charges for monthly sDSL broadband can be as low as US12.

Control of the internet

China is one of the countries with strict internet laws. Having said that, internet usage in China is very, very high for both business and social use. Because personal computers are still expensive by China's income standard, most people access the internet from cybercafes or from offices.

All websites hosted in China needs to be a approved by a government unit. One of the first thing you will notice in China is that domestic sites are blazingly fast but foreign hosted sites tend to be very slow. This is due to foreign sites having to go through a proxy as well as a bottleneck on China's limited conduit out to the international internet pipes.

Many foreign sites such as CNN, Falungong, Playboy and other sites deem sensitive to China's society are blocked.

Web applications and development in China are often of a high standard. Many domestic sites such as Alibaba and Sohu has made it to the very competitive top internet arenas. Many web development companies from Taiwan, South Korea and even the USA has also made China their development base for their web applications as China offers a large pool of competitive and high qualified web developers.

Ken Cheong worked, lived and travelled in China for the last 7 years. Radio has been really powerful in the past, specially at the times when older folks used to sit in front of the old dial tune box radio getting carried away listening to some hit talk shows from the past. When it all started there were only AM channels and these channels mainly had talk shows and story-telling. There was music too, but not to the great extent as it happened later. With the introduction of the FM channels, music programs were shifted mainly to the FM-s while the talk shows and stories remained for the AM channels.

However, with the popularization of TV as an alternate media for entertainment, the power of AM and FM radio was greatly diminished. Due to its variety of channels, great options and greater appeals to the senses, TV had almost driven the once powerful radio out of business. Nonetheless, some still held on to the old radio. It was probably because they could get into a multi-tasking mode i.e. doing other things while still listening to their favorite radio programs. This was one thing that they could probably have not been able to do with TV. TV required them to sit in front of it and concentrate on the programs. But this small issue was too minor to stop the diminishing power and importance of radio as a primary source of entertainment. Soon, radio was a thing of the past.

Another major problem with the older radios was the frustrating loss of reception due to the device getting out of range. People had already got into the habit of carrying portable radios with them while they were outdoors. And often, they would be out of range causing them to probably miss the crucial conclusion of an interesting discussion or the climax of a story.

In a bid to revive the radio experience, satellite radios were introduced. These radios typically had several channels, often hundreds of them, dedicated to specialized programs. The model was more like that of a TV. It solved the out of range issue of the older generation radios. With satellite radio, one could be anywhere in the continent, listening to the same streaming everywhere. Its various channels were designed to cater to the interests of several individuals across diverse demographics. However, the main problem with satellite radio was its cost. In order to subscribe to satellite radio, a charge of almost twenty dollars or more was required.

The evolution of radio started showing its potential and reached a more apt state towards the early nineties when the internet talk radio was introduced. It was a new wave in the advancement of talk radio that hit the market with a bang. Internet talk radio provided a cheap and powerful alternative to the old AM radios. It required a computer, an internet connection, a phone, headsets and software to get started. Subscribing to the channels came completely free. The reach was now global, a lot more than the continental average of the satellite radios. And adding more to it was the easy option of creating a channel and participating. Being on the radio to reach out to the entire world became open. It was then possible for an avid listener of a talk show for years to easily host his own talk show and let the world know about his views.

With the introduction of internet talk radio, the evolution of radios has clearly attained maturity.

This article is written by Ronn Jones, a marketing expert with years of experience in branding and internet marketing. The Migration Authorisation Code is a 17 to 19-digit unique identifier code consisting of both letters and numbers.

MACs usually begin with "BBIP", "FTIP", "BBDS", or "BBDP", and consist of 4 letters, 7 numbers (sometimes up to 9), a forward slash, 2 letters, 2 numbers, and 1 final letter.

Once requested, your internet provider should provide you the MAC code within 5 working days. This code will then be valid for 30 days in which the customer may switch broadband providers. While it should not take any longer than 10 working days to switch your broadband, there is no set limit imposed on broadband providers to switch you to a new provider and it can take up to 5 weeks.

Your internet service provider cannot refuse your request for a MAC code and must not charge you for the code either. This was introduced to help ease the process of switching your broadband and also allowing the switch to be done in just a few hours resulting in a temporary loss of internet.

The only exceptions for refusal are as follows:

?The account holder does not comply with standard checks by the ISP
?A contract is already terminated
?The MAC has already been requested
?The ISP has already submitted a cease request
?The ISP is unable to obtain a MAC from ISP whom customer is switching to

These rules were set by Ofcom, although, some broadband providers have been known to bend the rules just a little.

This has led some questions about whether some broadband service providers try and make it as difficult as possible for you to switch.

Even though broadband providers must comply with the rules, most providers will try to convince you to stay. They may question you about who you wish to move to and your reasons why and single out comparisons between themselves and their competitor in an attempt to hold on to you as a customer.

In some cases they may offer you something in return for your loyalty as a customer, for example a free upgrade to a higher level of service.

From your perspective, if you are satisfied with the level of service on offer from your existing provider, it always makes sense to listen to any offers that are made.

However, if you are determined to switch, you should so ?and the new MAC system should make it a lot easier to do so.

If you are interested in taking advantage of current broadband internet technology then you should compare many broadband providers available in your area.
Streamyx Hulu Langat
Streamyx Kepong
Streamyx Klang
Streamyx Pelabuhan Klang
Streamyx Seri Kembangan
Streamyx Shah Alam
Streamyx Subang Jaya
Streamyx Sungai Buloh
Streamyx List of Buildings
Ez 4g
Streamyx
Streamyx
Streamyx SOHO
Business Broadband
Streamyx Business

Switching Broadband Providers

For millions of broadband users who may be tempted by a better deal from another provider, the fear has always been that of being stuck in an internet-less limbo? waiting until their new service is switched on.

Thankfully, changes to the way switches take place have dramatically improved the situation.

On 14 February 2007, Ofcom introduced a code of conduct for moving between broadband service providers called the MAC Code of Conduct.

If they wish to switch, broadband customers need a Migration Authorisation Code (MAC). I am fortunate enough to have an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that provides up to three IP addresses. I connected a switch to my modem, and two routers (one wired, and the other wireless) to the switch. Each router has a separate IP address from my ISP. My desktop is connected to the wired router, while two laptops connect to the wireless one. I can connect either laptop to the wired router with a network cable if I choose to as well.

The biggest issue I wanted to address when setting up the wireless network is that of security. I have always been skeptical of wireless security, but since I have purchased a laptop, I decided to give wireless networking a try.

There is a lot of discussion on how to secure a wireless connection, some good, some bad, and some useless. This post will not go into detail about how to change the router settings to make it secure, but it will discuss what needs to be changed.

Administrative Credentials - Important
This is important whether you have a wireless or wired network. Ensure that all APs (access points) have a good strong password associated with the administrative account. If someone can get into your router because of a weak password, then your network can be compromised. You may also want to change the administrative ID as well.

Enable WPA Encryption - Important
This is probably the most important security measure to take when securing your wireless network. The previous standard called Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) was easy to crack within about 30 seconds.

The new Wi-fi Protected Access (WPA) is more secure and should be enabled. You must also choose a passphrase that will be needed for each computer to connect to your router. Choose a passphase that is long, hard to guess, but easy to remember. Write it down somewhere so you don't forget it. For assistance on creating a strong passphrase, please read my post on creating secure passwords. Follow the advice, but just make the passphrase longer.

Reducing the IP Addresses - Important
Routers allow you to limit the number of IP addresses they assign. If you have one computer, have the router assign only one IP address. If you have three computers, then the router should assign three IP addresses. This won't prevent someone from getting into your network, but if all computers are connected, then the router won't assign any more IP addresses to another computer.

Turning Off Router - Important
If you are going to be away for awhile, such as on vacation, simply turn off the router. If the router is off, then no one will be able to connect to it while you're away. You won't lose your router settings, and simply turn it back on when you return.

Turn off SSID Broadcast - Not Important
This is a debatable option with regards to a wireless connection. Many people would argue that not broadcasting your SSID will help with security. My opinion is that it won't really provide security. Those who you are trying to gain access to your wireless network can easily determine your SSID, whether it is broadcast or not. I have also had problems with connecting to a wireless network when the SSID is not broadcasted, so I leave my setting on broadcast.

Using MAC Filtering - Not Important
Similar to broadcasting the router's SSID, this is also a debatable point. An IP address is specific to a computer, a MAC address is specific to a network adapter within that computer. Enabling MAC filtering on your router only allows specific network adapters to connect to the router. While this may seem like a good idea, it can be a headache to manage the MAC addresses for all the computers that will be connecting to the wireless router. A knowledgeable person will also be able to "spoof" (imitate) a MAC address so it doesn't guarantee security.

Summary
There are many settings that can be changed in your wireless router to make your network secure. This article has listed many of them, and you can make use of all of them or only some.

The following, however, should be done to make your connection secure:

Changing the administrative password and ID.
Enabling WPA encryption.
Reduce the number of IP addresses.

Paul Salmon has been involved with computers for 20 years and currently works as a Senior Technical Systems Analyst. The study conducted a survey of 43,000 people, 61% of which chose their ISP because of the speeds that were promised to them. The problem is caused by ISP's advertising the maximum possible download speeds, but more often than not, these speeds are only possible in select areas.

The British phone network is responsible for delivering broadband to the homes of millions of users. Most of this is accomplished by using the traditional copper wires that were never originally designed to cope with dealing with high speed data transfer. Britain is seriously lagging behind the rest of the world when it comes to broadband speeds. BT are investing 10bn to try to update the UK network but it's looks as though it could take possible many years to catch up with the world leaders like Japan and France.

We are fast becoming a nation of download addicts, with music being the number one download choice, followed by games, films and pod casts. With the ever growing numbers of people who downloading increasing amounts of data, speed is becoming the number one factor when choosing their ISP.

Rob Barnes, head of broadband at a price comparison site, commented "As most people are only achieving half the speed they signed up for, a typical film of 500Mb could take up to four hours to download, instead of 60-90 minutes. If you're downloading a podcast of 50Mb, you'd expect it to be downloaded within 10 minutes if using an 8Mb line, on speeds less than this you could be waiting up to half an hour.

"As the downloading culture continues to grow, broadband speed becomes even more important. Thankfully, Ofcom has decided to step in and question six of the biggest Internet Service Providers, looking at the speeds they advertise and what people actually receive. From this consultation, providers should be required to give clear, transparent advice on the speeds people will be able to achieve; perhaps providing a test, like O2 broadband, as part of the process when they sign up to a new deal. In the meantime I'd recommend anyone who wants to download large files, such as films, to opt for a connection of 16Mb or faster with unlimited download capabilities. Providers such as Be Broadband, Virgin Media and Sky Broadband all offer this."

One search to compare UK Britain is in the Broadband Slow-Lane

A recent study of broadband users has highlighted that 44 per cent of customers are getting only half of the promised download speeds from their ISP's.

One search to compare UK broadband internet providers.

For more information on broadband and for great deals on cheap broadband visit http://moneysupermarket.com
Bgmusic Thumb
?ch=83&pg=1121&ac=3535
?gclid=cjkg4tiiojmcfri1egod0ruvrq
?gclid=cp6tp7v7n5mcfqmyewodysdrrg
?gclid=cmxvz7oimjmcfqx2taodpgfrvq
?gclid=cidmiv6wmjmcfrayewode0iwqq
?gclid=cn 60slwjpmcfrsyewodxldqsw
?gclid=cp6s4re2jpmcfq8yewodlcchtg
?gclid=cnodsqdenzmcfqscewodygnora
?gclid=cldiosoqmjmcfq01egodnwmnda
?gclid=civrjcqnm5mcfq03egodvj5qqg
?gclid=ckifjbrlnzmcfrgxewod5dbsqg
?gclid=ckrgp4brmjmcfrqaewodx2ktqq
?gclid=cmr8stehojmcfqc3egod4jt1rg
?gclid=cpxgynncnzmcfro1egod2g5nqw

Britain is in the Broadband Slow-Lane

A recent study of broadband users has highlighted that 44 per cent of customers are getting only half of the promised download speeds from their ISP's. type='text'>High Speed Satellite Internet

The latest addition to the list of newer and faster Internet accessing techniques is satellite Internet. Satellite Internet is the technology to connect to the World Wide Web though a satellite orbiting the earth. The data signals are exchanged between the host computer, ISP source and satellite.

Satellite Internet services are primarily of two types: one way and two way. In one-way satellite service, information can be downloaded via the satellite at a very high speed, but uploading is done via a regular modem. Two-way satellite Internet service supports both downloading as well as uploading of information. As uploading information through satellites may take slightly longer, it is advisable not to use this technology for applications which require fast, synchronous data transfer.

Using this service requires the installation of a dish at the user's location. Though expensive, this technology is extensively used in areas where terrestrial access to Internet is not viable, especially in sea vessels. The prime advantages of satellite Internet include: it can be used almost anywhere, it is fast, it offers 2-way connection speeds and unlimited access, and it is available in various packages to suit the user's needs.

Satellite Internet is also highly reliable. There are few incidences of a connection drop down while processing critical transactions via the net. Although a satellite connection facilitates fast Internet access, it is comparatively slower than other broadband technologies due to the long distance which the data has to travel. Its speed cannot be enhanced beyond a limit, while other services like DSL or Cable can attain much higher speeds.

However, without any wires or cables required, this technology is a sought-after option for far-off locations or sea vessels, as its reach is global.

Various countries offer different methodologies to use this technology, depending upon the location of the satellite. Extremely reliable and safe, with newer and better improvisations in the pipeline, this technology is constantly improving.

High Speed Internet provides detailed information on High Speed Internet, High Speed Internet Access, High Speed Internet Services, High Speed Satellite Internet and more. First, let us find the basis for comparison for in-home broadband services, often called consumer class, which is basic dial-up. Dial-up access streams at 56 Kbps (Kilobits per second), and it requires the use of a phone line. One cannot surf and talk at the same time. The cost for dial-up is $10-$25 per month. Reading further, one finds that with broadband high speed Internet, there is no comparison to dial-up Internet.

Satellite broadband has a 400 Kbps downstream and upstream speed.

A satellite connection can be used when DSL and Cable are not available. Unlike dial-up, satellite is an instant connection; multiple PC's can share the connection, and there is no need for a second phone line. Home satellite broadband high speed connections run approximately $60-100/month.

In comparison, DSL has a speed of 128Kbps to 1.5 Mbps downstream speed. 64 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps upstream speed which is up to 50 times faster than dial up, but one still has to have a landline for DSL. Downloading and streaming music, videos, movies, and playing online gaming just became faster and easier. Home-based DSL costs about $40-$50 per month.

Cable modems have 200Kbps to 2 Mbps downstream & upstream speed. Cable modems are always on with instant access, and there is no hassle with having a second phone line. Cable modems have comparable cost to DSL.

Units of Measurement - Broadband Internet Access Speed

bit= smallest unit of digital information, i.e. ones & zeros

byte= a set of bits

bps= bits per second

Kbps= kilobits per second =1000 bits per second

Mbps = Million bits per second =1,000,000 bits per second

Gbps = Gigabits per second = 1,000,000,000 (one billion) bits per second

Tbps = Terabits per second = 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion) bits per second

Consumer class broadband differs in costs and services offered from high speed Internet for businesses. For instance, DSL for business runs at 128Kbps to 1.5 Mbps downstream, and 64Kbps to 1.5 Mbps upstream for a cost of $90-$400 per month, depending upon the bandwidth speed required.

Another variation of business broad band is Fractional T1. Provided at the speed of 128 Kbps to 1.0 Mbps, Fractional T1 speed has some of the 24-64 Kbps channels turned off. Prices are approximately $220-$500 per month depending on fractional bandwidth required, which includes local loop. Hardware and installation costs vary.

DSL and Fractional T1 can be combined for a broadband speed of 1.544 Mbps using a digital circuit. T1/DS1 is dedicated Internet access, point-to-point or integrated (voice & data). Prices are approximately $500-1000 per month which includes local loop. Hardware and installation costs vary.

Fractional T3, which is 3 Mbps to 44.736 Mbps basic T3 with some of the 67-264 Kbps channels turned off, comes at a hefty price of approximately $3000-$5000/month, depending on fractional bandwidth speed required.

T3/DS3 has a broadband speed of 44.736 Mbps digital circuit. It can be dedicated Internet access, point-to-point or integrated. Prices are approx. $5000-15,000 per month plus local loop.

However, there is one part of the country that will finally be able to compete, the humble town of Ebbsfleet in Kent.

BT has stuck to its word, in that it would provide new major housing developments with fibre optic networks as opposed to installing traditional copper cables.

With fibre networks, broadband speeds hover around the 100Mbps mark. This is bog standard for residence in other parts of the world, such as Korea and Japan, who are reaping the benefits of fibre networks.

However, so far in the UK it has only been businesses that have gotten a taste of such blisteringly high speeds, with around 120,000 businesses hooked up to fibre optic broadband networks.

The housing development in Ebbsfleet though, will see some 10,000 homes built upon a fibre network. IP addresses consist of four numbers and look something like 117.0.0.1. All these numbers are usually assigned to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) within the region-based blocks. An IP-address can be used to identify the country or region from which a device is connecting to the Internet.

Earlier, ISPs issues one IP-address to each user. These are called static IP addresses. ISPs now issue IP addresses in a dynamic fashion out of a pool of addresses (using DHCP). These are referred to as dynamic IP addresses. With virtual hosting, a single machine can act like multiple machines (with multiple domain names and protocol addresses).

IP Address reveals your...

Using an IP-address it is quite easy to identify the place including the country, state, city, using a few web applications. Finding IP-address of the Yahoo, Rediff, Hotmail, etc, email senders is easy. Google masks the outgoing IP-address of the sender who sends mails using the Gmail web interface.

Using IP-Tracker like software installed on remote devices, you can access the same from anywhere. IP-Tracker constantly monitors the dynamic IPaddress of the device and whenever the IPaddress changes, it sends a mail to your inbox notifying you of your new IPaddress.

How can I change my IP Address

If you are using a dial-up connection, you can simply dialup through an alternate access number

For cable/DSL with a router:

Open your router control panel

Increase your MAC address by one number

Then disconnect and reconnect your router. Now, after doing this, your ISP will give a new IP.

If you find any problem, switch back to previous MAC

How can I hide my IP Address

You can hide your IPaddress using...

IP changer software.

anonymous software

Advantages of knowing my IP Address

Knowing your IPaddress can allow you to access

services running on your machine (E.g., online games)

servers (FTP, web, mail)

remote access utilities (MS Remote Desktop, GoToMyPC, PCAnywhere).

Virtual Hosting Explained

Virtual hosting allows a single machine act like multiple machines (with multiple domain names and IP-addresses).

How can I know the IP-address of the person whom you have been chatting in your IM (Instant Messenger)

If you want to know the IP, run a packet sniffer and initiate a file transfer.

You will need to set up a file transfer in order to see the internet protocol address of the person you are communicating with; the transfer will go pretty much direct to the other person's computer. Otherwise you get the protocol address of the server.

If you run a packet sniffer, you need to send a request using ICMP, and then TCP with the SYN ACK flag set) and the target computer will respond. TCP SYN ACK packet gives you the target device's port number, IP-address, etc.

But there are exceptions. If the target device runs behind a router with a hardware firewall, you may not get the actual protocol address you are looking for; instead, a WAN IP of some sort usually the one from the ISP will be displayed.

In conclusion, since internet protocol addresses reveal your physical location and also gives more details to others; it is advisable not to display your protocol address except for essential and important communication. Mask the IP-address for you and your device's security sake.

Resources:
Hacking - What, When & How
Browsers - Gateway to the Internet
Strategies to Learn English Article
Streamyx
Streamyx Combo
Streamyx Promotion
Streamyx Online Registration
Streamyx Online
Streamyx Malaysia
Streamyx
Streamyx
Streamyx
Wireless Streamyx
Streamyx modem
Streamyx ISP
Streamyx
Streamyx
Streamyx

How to Secure a Wireless Network

I use both a wired and wireless network at home.

The following, however, should be done to make your connection secure:

Changing the administrative password and ID.
Enabling WPA encryption.
Reduce the number of IP addresses.

Paul Salmon has been involved with computers for 20 years and currently works as a Senior Technical Systems Analyst.

The following, however, should be done to make your connection secure:

Changing the administrative password and ID.
Enabling WPA encryption.
Reduce the number of IP addresses.

Paul Salmon has been involved with computers for 20 years and currently works as a Senior Technical Systems Analyst. While this article will focus on general steps involved in proper connection forwarding to CCTV DVR, the part two is all about dynamic DNS support and workarounds. Before we step into the main subject, I like to explain very briefly a few key aspects of Internet connection for those of us not familiar with term like IP address, DDNS, port forwarding or IP mapping.

Terminology:

Every computer or other network device, in our case CCTV recorder has its own address called IP address, much like your home address it allows the information to find its way in enormous world of internet. IP address has four groups of numbers separated by dots; the number range is between 0 and 255. There are two separate networks that we need to take into consideration, LAN for Local Area Network and WAN for Wide Area Network. LAN has its own IP addresses and handles connection on local network devices (computers or devices located in your home or office network), if WAN IP is your home address than LAN IP would be your apartment number.

WAN IP is an external address visible to every user on the Internet. We will explain rest of the terminology as we go along.

Setup:

The best way to explain and clarify surveillance DVR connection setup is to use an example. In our example, we will setup DVR model VDV-074 from DVRExperts thru Netopia Router/Modem combo currently used by AT&T DSL provider with static IP service, I will also use Linksys WRT54G Router for Cable DSL connection. Security DVR recorder needs to be connected to the Internet through Router and Modem, in some cases Router and Modem are all in one devices, for example Netopia Routers.

For standalone Modems please connect the Internet out to WAN port, on your Router. Connect CCTV DVR and computers to available ports on the Router as well. Your Router will need to be setup now to log in to the Internet service provider and establish connection.

Netopia Router users:

Open up browser on your computer and type into the address bar your routers default IP http://192.168.1.254. User name and password window should appear; the default user name and password for Netopia Routers are admin for user and serial number of your Router for the password.

Select Configure followed by Quick start link, type your Internet service providers user name (email address) and your ISP password. Click submit and alert icon located in upper right corner (I know it is strange), finally select save and restart. Your connection should be up in minute or so, click home link to see your connection status.

Linksys Router users:

Open up browser on your computer and type into the address bar your routers default IP http://192.168.1.1. User name and password window should appear; the default user name and password for Linksys routers are admin for user and admin for the password.

The home page of the router has ISP settings, type in your email address as a user name and ISP password for the password, select save or submit. The Router will restart after minute or so, log in again and go to status page to see if your connection status is UP.

If everything is ok and your connection is UP, we can now proceed to fun part of the setup process

There is great number of different security Digital Video Recorders on the market, so please follow your DVR's manual for details; I will only provide the proper settings. In the DVR menu, setup static LAN (Internal) IP for the DVR, in our example we have 3 computers and DVR. Each device has assigned LAN IP address as follows:

Computer 1 - 192.168.1.100

Computer 2 - 192.168.1.101

Computer 3 - 192.168.1.102

DVR - 192.168.1.103

The surveillance DVR will now be accessible within our network by typing its assigned internal IP (192.168.1.103) into browser or connection software. What we need now is to forward the connection from external IP (WAN) which is accessible from outside of our network to the LAN IP of the DVR (192.168.1.103).

Netopia Router users:

Select Configure followed by Advanced and finally IP Maps. IP map table should be empty, click on add and type into IP Map Entry Name text box the name of your DVR connection, in our example I just typed in DVR so I know what this IP map is for. In Internal IP address box type in 192.168.1.103, for external IP address refer to you ISP work sheet and find out what is your IP. In some cases ISP will provide more than one static IP, you can choose one of them.

Click submit and alert icon located in upper right corner, finally select save and restart.

From now on anyone requesting external IP will be forwarded to the internal IP of the DVR (192.168.1.103), therefore the connection should be established successfully.

Linksys Router users:

When setting up your DVR for access from the Internet, you will need to configure Port Forwarding on your Linksys Router. This can be accomplished in one of two ways, Specific Port Forwarding or the DMZ host. The DMZ host automatically forwards all incoming connection requests to a given IP address on your local network. Open the Applications & Gaming section of the router and choose DMZ. DMZ is not secure and should only be used with embedded, non-PC based CCTV recorders.

To expose the DVR to the Internet, enter the DVR local IP address (192.168.1.103) in the DMZ Host IP address box. In some cases you may just want to forward specific ports to your security DVR. If you are running any other device/server that hosts services available to the internet, you will want to use specific port forwarding instead of the DMZ Host, also if your DVR is PC based it is strongly recommended for security reasons, to only forward ports used by DVR connection. Open the applications & Gaming section of the router and choose Port Range Forwarding. Type in the name for the connection, starting port number, ending port number and internal IP of the DVR (192.168.1.103 in our example). Save and exit.

Your connection is now setup properly.

You probably noticed the term static IP in this article, and are wondering what that is.

Well, static IP is what the name suggests an IP that never changes. While there is no problem with internal IP selection; we can use whatever we want or prefer - the external IP, usually is dynamic. The static IP has to be requested from the ISP and is more expensive than dynamic IP. In our case we do want static IP so we have address for CCTV DVR connection that will never change.

Throughout this tutorial I have assumed that the external static IP is available.

Unfortunately in many areas it is not, or the cost is prohibitive. Don't panic yet, there is at least couple of different ways around this problem and I will try to go over each approach in my next article "How to use free dynamic DNS services for DVR connection."

Robert Moskal is Technical Department Manager at V2Comp,Inc, a major distributor of security equipment located in Chicago area. type='text'>Broadband - What Affects Your Speed?

Broadband providers have been under scrutiny recently, as it has come to light that broadband speeds advertised by ISP's (Internet Service Providers) are not matching actual broadband speeds that customers receive.

It's proving to be a frustrating time for many customers. Many have been promised speeds of up to 8 Meg, but they are finding themselves with connection speeds, that in some cases are only marginally better than dial-up.

So, what are the contributing factors that affect broadband speeds? There are in fact numerous conditions that exist that can hamper your connection, and unfortunately there are no quick fix solutions to any of the problems.

Conditions that can cause poor internet speeds include:

The distance from the exchange

This is probably the single biggest contributing factor to broadband speeds. The closer you are to the telephone exchange the better your chances are of getting faster internet speeds. Only those living close to an exchange will be able to get anywhere near the 8meg download speeds promised by many of the providers.

The number of computers on a network

If have a number of computers in your household hooked up to the same router, then this will affect your broadband speeds as each computer will be sharing the one connection.

Quality of cables

Your ISP should provide you with high capacity modem cables as part of their package. But, if they haven't then it's wise to check that the cabling you are using is up to the job intended. Also, poor quality internal telephone cabling can affect the quality of your service.

Weather Conditions

Severe weather conditions can cause problems with the ADSL signal which in turn affects internet speeds.

Viruses

Always use good virus protection software. A computer that is poorly protected from viruses and spyware will inevitably begin to lose performance. Virus programs running in the background hog your bandwidth.

Time of day

The peak times when people surf the internet are between 6pm - 11pm. During these peak times it's common to experience slower internet speeds.

One search to compare UK broadband internet providers.

For more information on broadband and for great deals on cheap broadband visit moneysupermarket
Streamyx Streamyx87693
Streamyx Streamyx56434
Streamyx Dsl77805
Streamyx Streamyx71942
Streamyx Kota21621
Streamyx Streamyx32363
Streamyx Streamyx41752
Streamyx Streamyx70369
Streamyx Streamyx99875
Streamyx Streamyx87786
Streamyx Mail52568
Streamyx Mail44144
Streamyx Speed24550
Streamyx Streamyx42300
Streamyx Streamyx13125
